Origins
How a paper house began
Fort, Mumbai
Chimanlals grew out of the handmade-paper department of Chimanlals Paper Co., and later became Chimanlals Pvt. Ltd.
With roots in Mumbai's paper trade spanning decades, the company has helped bring Indian handmade paper into everyday use, turning it into cards, envelopes, letter papers and gifting objects that people keep, not just admire.

The house
A heritage paper house
Designs are largely screen printed by hand, a slow, labour-led process that lays down dense, saturated colour. Because the work is done by hand, no two sheets are quite identical.
India
Motifs are drawn from Indian folk art, fabric design and embroidery, miniature painting, architecture, pottery and jewellery, alongside a range of contemporary designs.
Fort
It all comes together at the Fort showroom on D.N. Road, where colourways sit side by side and the current range can be seen, compared and confirmed in person.

Paper Culture has long been part of the Chimanlals identity: two words set down on the house’s own paper, in the same breath as the wordmark.

The Craft
Printed by hand, screen by screen
Chimanlals largely uses silk-screen printing, which the company profile describes as a labour-oriented process with a rich, vibrant result.
Because the work is done by hand, small variations are part of the result rather than a flaw.
